"It is a necessary task to find motivation in making and sharing art when seemingly everywhere
you turn artists are undervalued and over charged. I hear often that “art is a luxury.” How can art
be a luxury when humans (yes all of us!) are consistently drawn to creating a pleasurable
experience in our personal spaces and on our bodies? Art is not a luxury, it is how our stories,
memories, emotional expression, humanity are shared to strengthen community and belonging.
Is it bold to say: making a living off of creating aesthetics/art is not a trivial or useless line of
work - it is essential to maintain our wander, individuality, hope, emotional wellbeing - the very
reason this life is worth living! Just imagine, really spend some time with this thought: a world
without art; no music, no style, no imagery to enliven and contemplate. The work of an artist is
humanitarian work.
My stamina for making art has wavered in the last few years as I’ve faced the endless
competition with the capitalist machine grinding to make the rich richer through devaluing the
work of the artist while simultaneously replacing us with machines (think about mass made art
or now AI). 2025 was another year I battled futilely for the time I took to engage in the grounding
experience of making art; not to mention asking people to purchase it so I could pay my rent.
But this is the complicated cycle within capitalism, the aim of which is to squash hope and
creativity and gain control of all means of production.
I know many of us are longing for the connections provided by enriching experiences. As I
approach this new year, I am reframing and examining my experience with making and selling
my work. Whether it was made by my hands, or those of another artist, art enriches my life. It is
high time I recognize the value that I, as an artist, bring to the lives around me. Artists have a
responsibility to keep producing art. Art is the antidote to the “productivity narrative” we are
force-fed. Art is where hope is created, it’s where a different future becomes possible, where we
find pleasure and authentic expression, and a means to document what we are collectively
experiencing so we can reclaim our voices against the odds." - Raven Rohrig
