BIG FEELINGS & STRONG IDENTITY: GASSS TALKS TO THE GOLDEN CATS
Who are The Golden Cats?
Laura: We’re Laura and Kyle, and the band is called Golden Cats. The band's basically about accepting both your inner light and your shadow - loving all the nuances of being human, even the parts that aren’t pretty or perfect.
Kyle: Yeah, it’s basically emotional duality but on music. I’m on drums and guitars, Laura writes and sings, and we both produce the songs together until it's finished.
Where are you from? And when did you start creating music?
Kyle: We’re from Earth. Very important detail.
Laura: Musically, though, we both started early. I was writing songs as a kid, like, those middle school notepads were so full of feelings that they had the nuns in my school worried. And Kyle was…
Kyle: …smashing pans in my mom’s kitchen. I grew up playing drums and did classical piano for a few years as well. Laura ended up getting signed to a label, and we met later at a rehearsal.
Laura: We realized then we had the same references, the same emotional language, and the same need to turn feelings into sound. After that, it was kind of inevitable and we needed to start writing.
Joy Division or New Order?
Kyle: Joy Division.
Laura: But also… New Order.
We noticed (and love) you have a lot of singles. Do you have plans to press a full LP?
Laura: Yes! Thanks for asking, and we’re really excited about it.
Kyle: We’ve been releasing singles very intentionally, like chapters.
Laura: We care a lot about the meaning and lore of Golden Cats- making sure everything connects emotionally and sonically before a full LP. But it’s coming, for sure.
Are you planning on touring anytime soon? When is your next show?
Kyle: Definitely planning on touring.
Laura: We’re looking at a few festivals first, and then some very selective U.S. shows - smaller rooms, close fans, real connection.
Kyle: We want to actually feel the ground before running.
Your band has a beautiful way of taking heartbreak and making it beautiful. What is the inspiration coming from?
Laura: Thank you - that really means a lot.
Kyle: For us, it’s the magic of making art.
Laura: We love taking things that are uncomfortable, messy, or even taboo, and transforming them into something beautiful. It’s about demystifying pain instead of hiding from it.
As a band, who are some of your greatest musical influences?
Kyle: Honestly, every indie artist to ever exist.
Laura: But especially artists who blend emotion and atmosphere - Muse, Phantogram, Tame Impala, Foster the People, The Strokes, Twenty One Pilots, TV Girl, Lana Del Rey, Miley Cyrus…
Kyle: Big feelings, strong identities, no fear.
What was the last song you listened to in headphones? What artists are you loving right now?
Laura: “Right Thing” by Bayonne. Such a cool, experimental track - very 2016 in the best way.
Kyle: “Fog Rolls In” by Doombird. We’ve been deep in an indie rabbit hole lately.
The Cure or Echo & The Bunnymen?
Kyle: The Cure.
Laura: Always The Cure.
But we love the Bunnymen too - no disrespect.
Tell us about anything you’ve got going on (tour, album, video… new cat lol) or anything you want us to know.
Laura: We’re working on a very special light and shadow EP planned for October.
Kyle: And we cannot wait to play these songs live - they’re meant to be felt in a room, together.
Laura: Also… No new cats, only our kittens! (fans)
In one word, describe your music.
Laura: Integration.
Kyle: Yeah. Integration.
